Dalmatia has a reach and long musical tradition. One of the musical trademarks is undoubtedly the stirring sound of the klapa. The klapa basically refers to five-to-eight member ensembles performing a capella songs with delicate harmonies. Traditionally, the ensemble consists only of male voices, but nowadays there are of many mixed and female ensembles. Typical klapa songs are usually quite serenades-like love songs, usually addressing a beloved girl. However, merry and satirical songs also exist. Its basic characteristic and distinction are simply vocal harmony-singing, only seldom discreetly and quietly accompanied by instruments.
Best place to experience klapa singing at its best is Festival of Dalmatian klapas in Omiš, which features outdoor concerts in the centre of Omiš throughout the month of July. In only few years, this festival has grown into a cultural institution of great importance and reputation. Klapas are an important focus of local life and a source of considerable pride for the communities they come from.
