Camp Croatia Ferry ride Split Vis is among the worlds most beautiful rides

Adriatic coast is known for it’s breathtaking scenery, so it is no wonder that the ferry line between Split and Vis is listed among the most beautiful rides in the world. This two-and-a-half-hour ride stands out for its exceptional beauty. You’ll be thrilled as the panorama of Split recedes and your boat slips through the narrow pass between the islands of Šolta and Brač. Your destination is Vis, the most remote large inhabited Dalmatian island. It is a place of blue sea, cliffs nad islets, vineyards and also with rich cultural heritage. Vis is a place for a relaxing holiday on secluded beaches of numerous peaceful bays, in transparent blue sea and under the hot sun.

Salmo obtusirostris salonitana “Solinka” – Endemic trout

November

2011

Camping Split is surrounded on two side by the sea and on the third by river mouth of  Žrnovnica.

River Žrnovnica is a karst river with a faster flow with many small waterfalls and rapids. It flows through the town of Žrnovnica into the sea, just a few kilometers from Split. In its upper course river Žrnovnica passes through a canyon that is poorly accessible to people, so it is the best preserved part. It’s length is 5.2 km, average width is 5 meters.

Endemic trout subspecies Salmo obtusirostris salonitana “Solinka” is found in the Žrnovnica river. Solinka is characterized by fleshy lips, elliptical lateral line scales, reduced to little more than nerve tube, smaller than scales in adjacent rows; 100-120 scales along lateral line; 26-32 gill rakers. Differs further by the combination of the following features: jaw teeth small or indistinct; snout blunt; and mouth subinferior. It feeds on gammarus, small snails and insects. It spawns in March. The start of spawning of the Solinka is in the third, and a full spawn in the fourth year of life. This fish species is thought to be endangered not only by historic river diversions, but by increasing urbanisation, overfishing and by the presence of the rainbow trout. Today, along salmo obtusirostris salonitanais other species such as californian trout and eel exist in river Žrnovnica.
